-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=3506 Draconian Ohio Breed-Specific Bill Introduced [Tuesday, May 20, 2008] Ohio House Bill 568, introduced by Representative Tyrone Yates of Cincinnati, seeks to prohibit the ownership, keeping, or harboring of a dog that "belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog." Furthermore, if this bill is passed and adopted into law, all such dogs will be seized and euthanized. It is imperative that all concerned dog owners in Ohio contact their elected representatives and express their vehement opposition to this draconian legislation. The American Kennel Club supports reasonable, enforceable, non-discriminatory laws to govern the ownership of dogs. The AKC believes that dog owners should be responsible for their dogs. We support laws that: establish a fair process by which specific dogs are identified as "dangerous" based on stated, measurable actions; impose appropriate penalties on irresponsible owners; and establish a well-defined method for dealing with dogs proven to be dangerous. The American Kennel Club strongly opposes any legislation that determines a dog to be "dangerous" based on specific breeds or phenotypic classes of dogs. HB 568 unacceptably provides that: * No person shall own, keep, or harbor a dog that belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog. * No later than 90 days after the effective date of this bill, a person who owns, keeps, or harbor a pit bull dog will be forced to surrender the dog to a dog warden. * Within ten days of surrender, the dog warden shall euthanize the dog. * If an officer has probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull, the officer may apply for a search warrant. After obtaining a search warrant, an officer shall seize the dog and transfer the dog to the dog warden, who shall euthanize the dog within 10 days. WHAT YOU CAN DO: All concerned Ohio dog owners should contact their elected representatives and express their strong opposition to HB 568. To find your elected representatives, click here. For more information, please contact AKC's Government Relations Department at (919) 816-3720, or e-mail doglaw@akc.org. Unfortunately, I'm in Oklahoma, so my signature won't help. I am appalled at BSL!!! It is NOT the breed, it's the owners!!! Why oh why can't the "officials" understand that?!?! |

I think this is horrible! So many people blame the dogs when it's the owners that are the problem. I wish I could sign for you but I live in Pa so my signature won't help. We have lots of sweet wonderful 'pit breeds' at our shelter and none of them deserve to be homeless. It's so sad how people treat dogs. If dogs treated us the way some people treat them, we would all be in trouble... It's too bad people don't understand the concept of 'unconditional love' like dogs do! |

Oh ladies this debate has gone on in Ontario Canada and unfortunately part of the debate has been lost. In Ontario Canada if you own a pitbull it must be muzzled in public, you cannot bred this animal. These animals are all categorized in the same way. It doesn't matter if they are well behaved loving pets, all pit bulls are labelled dangerous I have to tell you these animals do intimidate me, I will avoid crossing their paths, but I have friends who own the breed they are responsible pet owners, and their pets are well behaved. My concern is that it starts with one breed and then continues. Although I'm not a pit bull owner where does it stop? My signature as a canadian won't hold water either, but I wanted you to know if you feel strongly about supporting this don't think your signatue wont' make a difference, it could. Its happened here, no more pitties in Ontario, unless they are muzzeled in public and no breeding. If it means something to you nows the time. |

When will it end? I tell you, if they ever try to ban pit bulls in NC- I wouldn't stop fighting and I wouldn't let them take Lilo without a fight, either. Even if it meant me going to jail. >:| |

I don't understand these STUPID laws!!! There is nothing wrong with this breed! Nothing! It's bad owners that are the problem!!! Honestly, we see tons of Pit Bulls at the shelter I work at and I've yet to meet a mean spirited pupperdog in the bunch. We get some really abused ones too and they still manage to want to be with people and crave the love. Most of the people who want to pass these laws have never even met a pit bull in there life! People are just dumb... the more I meet, the more I prefer the company of dogs
